ASHA's Stand on SLP Assistants

The training and use of  SLPAs have been an issue in our profession for many years. In 1996, the LC approved guidelines for the training, credentialing, use and supervision of SLPAs and to maintain an SLPA registry. However, in 2003, the LC voted to end ASHA's financial support for the SLPA registration program and the approval process for training programs because of the estimated cost of $495,000.00. After much discussion during the open membership forum, the matter was called to a vote.
